A normal test is one in which the material between the two clips pulls out to a point or to a thread and rupture occurs where the cross-sectional area is minimum. Report the average of three normal tests as the ductility of the sample, provided the three determinations be within ± 0.5 percent of their mean value.

See Page 1. 4.9 CONCLUSION From the experiment that was carried out, penetration of bitumen is reached at mean 80.3 mm which is 3 location of bitumen is tested. And, the penetration value of the test conducted is satisfying, according to the general specification of the penetration for bitumen grade 80/100 used in Malaysia is between 80 – 100 mm.

To find out the consistency/hardness of the Bitumen and thereby to find out its grade using the Bitumen penetration test. APPARATUS: Standard Penetration test apparatus with all the accessories such as, needle, weight and timer. Heater; water bath with temperature control, maintained at 25° ± 0.1 °C, containing not less than 10 litres of water.

Penetration value of bitumen test. The Penetration value = G2- G1. A minimum of 3 tests has to be done for the same sample at different points. Each test point should be conducted at 10mm away from the previous test point. It should also be 10mm inside of the container, as shown in the below picture.

Bitumen is a viscous complex high molecular weight hydrocarbon derived from the process of petroleum refining. Newman (2004, pp120-122)It is incorporated into many substances which are termed bituminous materials. Asphalt and tar are used in numerous bituminous materials used in civil engineering. Penetration value is the measure of the ...

Penetration value of different types of bitumen used in road construction range between 20 to 225. However, 30/40 and 80/100 grade bitumen is more common for road construction depending upon the type of construction and climate conditions. In hot 30/40 bitumen is preferred. The value of temperature effects the use of the bitumen.

6.Flash and Fire point test. 7.Float test. 8.Loss on heating test. 1. PENETRATION TEST. It is done to find out the grade of the bitumen. It measures the hardness or softness of bitumen by measuring the depth in tenths of a millimeter to which a standard loaded needle will penetrate vertically in 5 seconds.

Softening Point Test of Bitumen. The softening point shows the temperature at which the bitumen gains a certain degree of softening under the specifications of the test. This test is carried out by using the Ring and Ball apparatus. The softening point helps to determine the temperature up to which bitumen can be heated for different road use applications.

3.The test given idea of the temperature at which the bitumin materials attain a particular viscosity. 4.Bitumen with higher softening point may be preferred in warmer places. 5.Softening point should be higher than the hottest day temperature, which is anticipated in that area otherwise bitumen may sufficiently soften.

Earlier, we had discussed the penetration test of bitumen to find out the consistency or hardness, grade the bitumen for the construction work. In this, we are going to test the softening point of bitumen. The softening point test used to determine the melting point in which the bitumen reaches the viscosity (semi-liquid form).

Note the three separate readings and quote the penetration as the average to the nearest whole unit.

Significance of Penetration Test. The penetration test is carried out to classify bitumens into different grades. In BS (UK) literature, the ranges start from 15 (hardest bitumen) to 450 units (softest Bitumen). in India, bitumen's are available with penetration values varying from 20 to 450.

There are many tests which are conducted to check the quality of bitumen. Bitumen is very important component of many construction sites like roads, highways. Many tests are done to ensure the quality of bitumen. Some of these are given below :-1. Bitumen Content 2. Ductility Of Bitumen. 3. Penetration of Bitumen 4. Specific Gravity of Bitumen 5.

Certain performance requisites of bitumen and the mix correspond with these phenomena and must therefore be kept under control. The second level of interpretation consists in under-standing and interpreting the laboratory tests conducted and the engineering-based use of the results obtained. The third level of interpretation, more specialistic and

Procedure of Penetration Test on Bitumen: In the standard test condition, a standard needle of a total load of 100 g is applied to the surface of an asphalt or Liquid bitumen sample at a temperature of 25 °C for 5 seconds. The amount of penetration of the needle at the end of 5 seconds is measured in units of 0.1 mm (or penetration unit).

Quality Standard: As Per IS 1203 Bitumen Penetration Test Apparatus are used for testing bitumen, tar, cement and soils. A Chosen force is applied over a given area for a known period of time and the depth of penetration or the depression made in the sample is measured in tenths of a millimeter which is expressed as a penetration number.

Penetration test is a frequently adopted test on bitumen to classify the substance in relation to hardness. An 80/100 mark bitumen shows that its penetration value is ranged between 80 & 100. Ranking of bitumen contributes in assessment of its aptness in diverse climatic situation and varieties of construction.

The penetration grade bitumen is refinery bitumen that is manufactured at different viscosities. The penetration test is carried out to characterize the bitumen, based on the hardness. Thus, it has the name penetration bitumen. The penetration bitumen grades range from 15 to 450 for road bitumen. But the most commonly used range is 25 to 200.

Commonly used grades are 30/40, 60/70 and 80/100. In warmer regions, lower penetration grades are preferred and in colder regions bitumen with higher penetration values are used. The test is not intended to estimate consistency of softer materials like cut back, which are usually graded by viscosity test. 8.2. RELATED THEORY 8.2.1.

Penetration Test of Bitumen. Penetration test of Bitumen determines the hardness or softness of bitumen by measuring the depth in millimeter to which a standard loaded needle will penetrate vertically in five seconds while the temperature of the bitumen sample is maintained at 25 C.
